Catherine Just (Los Angeles, b. 1968)
Catherine Just is an interdisciplicnary artist and photographer based in Los Angeles. She prefers film over digital, working with large format film cameras, long exposures, vintage Polaroids, and alternative processes. Her photographs explore the space between presence and memory, intimacy and absence.
For more than thirty years, Catherine has created bodies of work that are both deeply personal and universal. Her images reveal what’s often left unsaid: the pause between words, the stillness between breaths, the tender moments between heartbeats. She stitches red thread directly onto her photographs, types words with a vintage typewriter, applies gold leaf, oil pastels and other mixed media to her photographs adding texture and layers that carry memory and meaning.
Her art grows out of lived experience including more 38 years of sobriety from a meth addiction. The work is an ongoing practice of listening with her entire being. Catherine apprenticed with Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, whose teachings continue to shape her approach to creativity and life. She sees image-making as an act of truth-telling, a place to ask questions, and a way to create personal and collective healing.
Catherine received her BFA in Photography, Film, and Video from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her work has been shown at Photo London, The Milan Photo Fair, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Photos de Femmes (Château de LaLande), and WhiteWalls Art Projects (Australia). Her photographs have appeared on the cover of National Geographic Magazine, in O Magazine, and in other international publications. She is represented by WhiteWalls Art Projects (New South Wales) and Alta Vista Arts (Los Angeles) and Fabrik Projects Gallery (Los Angeles).
Alongside her art practice, Catherine teaches and leads retreats and offers transformational photo sessions internationally. She also teaches online through the Los Angeles Center of Photography. She is the proud mama (co-parenting) of Max, her teenage son with Down syndrome, who often collaborates with her on projects that reframe visibility, inclusion, and unconditional love.
