The Journey — A 5-Session Course

Session 1: The Opening

What is cyanotype?
You’ll learn what a cyanotype is and see inspiring examples of cyanotypes from the very first one made through history. You’ll see a slideshow of my own work with the story behind each one and the process I used to make them that’s a bit outside the box of typical cyanotypes. You’ll gather the supplies from the supply list I’ve included.

Session 2: The Alchemy of Making

Hands-on demonstration of the process.
You’ll watch me create cyanotypes from start to finish with different papers to see different results. I’ll give you a creative prompt you can use to make your first cyanotype.

Session 3: Emotional Topography Part 1
How to create Cyanotypes as Emotional Topography.
You’ll learn how to gather objects that have deeper meaning to you based on your own personal stories. I’ll teach you a writing practice that helps me find the deeper meaning inside my own life and how I pick the objects as symbols in my cyanotypes. You’ll be given a creative prompt you can use to start building your own visual language.

Session 4: Emotional Topography Part 2
A deeper exploration of personal narrative and deeper meaning. I’ll share more ways to use the process itself to create more meaning. This time with a toning process using tea or coffee to create different tones of sepia and brown instead of blue.

Session 5: Pushing the envelope
Take your creativity to the next level with 10 creative prompts to push yourself a little further into exploring this rich blue world of cyanotype as emotional topography. I’ll share with you some of my own layered approaches to my work that can help you deepen your own.

You’ll create a visual poem - a small series shaped by feeling, shadow, memory, and light.
